The Complete Guide to the Moroccan Hammam Ritual: A Step-by-Step Experience at Home
Share
Discover the ancient beauty secret that Moroccan women have passed down for generations — and how to recreate it in your own home.
What Is the Moroccan Hammam Ritual?
Long before modern skincare, Moroccan women had mastered the art of deep cleansing, exfoliation, and nourishment through the hammam ritual — a weekly bathing tradition rooted in Berber culture and centuries of wisdom.
The hammam (Arabic for "spreader of warmth") is more than a bath. It's a full-body reset: a ritual that purifies the skin, relaxes the muscles, and restores a sense of calm. Traditionally performed in communal bathhouses across Morocco, the hammam ritual is now beloved worldwide — and with the right products, you can bring this luxurious experience home.
The Benefits of the Moroccan Hammam Ritual
- Deep exfoliation — removes dead skin cells for visibly smoother, brighter skin
- Improved circulation — the heat and scrubbing stimulate blood flow
- Deep hydration — skin absorbs moisture far more effectively after exfoliation
- Muscle relaxation — steam and warmth ease tension and stress
- Radiant glow — the combination of black soap and kessa exfoliation is unmatched for luminosity
What You'll Need
To recreate an authentic Moroccan hammam at home, you'll need three essential products:
- 🖤 Moroccan Black Soap (Beldi Soap) — a natural olive-based soap that softens and prepares the skin
- 🧤 Kessa Glove — the traditional exfoliating mitt that reveals fresh, new skin
- 🌿 Ghassoul Clay Mask — a mineral-rich Moroccan clay that purifies and nourishes
Step-by-Step: The Moroccan Hammam Ritual
Step 1: Create the Steam (5–10 minutes)
Begin by warming your bathroom. Run a hot shower and allow the room to fill with steam, or take a long, warm bath. The heat opens your pores and softens the skin, preparing it for deep cleansing.
Tip: The hotter and steamier, the better. This is the foundation of the entire ritual.
Step 2: Apply Moroccan Black Soap (5–10 minutes)
Once your skin is warm and damp, apply Moroccan Black Soap generously all over your body. This traditional beldi soap — made from olive oil and macerated olives — is rich in Vitamin E and natural antioxidants.
Leave it on for 5–10 minutes to deeply penetrate and soften the skin. You'll notice it working as your skin begins to feel supple and ready.
Our Moroccan Black Soap is sourced directly from Agadir — the heart of Morocco's Argan region — crafted using the same traditional methods passed down through generations of Berber women.
Step 3: Exfoliate with the Kessa Glove (5–10 minutes)
This is the transformative step. Using your Kessa Glove, scrub your skin in long, firm strokes — and watch as rolls of dead skin lift away, revealing the fresh, glowing skin beneath.
Work from your shoulders down, using circular and sweeping motions. Don't be alarmed by what comes off — that's exactly the point.
Our Kessa Gloves are woven from traditional Moroccan kessa fabric — firm enough to exfoliate deeply, gentle enough for regular use.
Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse off completely with warm water, removing all traces of black soap and exfoliated skin. Your skin will already feel noticeably softer and smoother at this stage.
Step 5: Apply Ghassoul Clay Mask (10–15 minutes)
The final purifying step. Ghassoul clay (also known as Rhassoul) is a rare mineral-rich clay found only in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Mix it into a smooth paste and apply to your face and body.
Leave for 10–15 minutes while you relax. The clay draws out impurities, tightens pores, and leaves skin feeling velvety and refined.
Rinse off with warm water and pat dry gently.
Step 6: Moisturise & Nourish
After the hammam, your skin is in its most receptive state. Apply your favourite body oil or moisturiser — Argan oil is the traditional Moroccan choice — to lock in hydration and complete the ritual.
How Often Should You Do the Hammam Ritual?
Moroccan women traditionally perform the hammam ritual once a week. This frequency is ideal for maintaining smooth, radiant skin without over-exfoliating. For sensitive skin, once every two weeks is perfectly effective.
